Hotel and parking packages at Gatwick

For very early departures, a night near the airport with parking bundled in is often cheaper than it sounds — and safer than driving through the night.

Gatwick runs a lot of very early departures, and a check-in deadline before dawn creates a genuine problem for anyone who does not live nearby. A hotel-and-parking package solves it by combining the two things you would otherwise buy separately.

How the packages work

You book a room at a hotel near the airport for the night before you fly. Included in the booking is the right to leave your car at the hotel — or at an associated compound — for the duration of your trip. You get to the terminal by hotel transfer or a shared shuttle bus, and you collect the car on your return.

The result is that you sleep near the airport, wake up a short transfer away from check-in, and never drive tired.

The arithmetic

These packages look expensive next to a bare parking quote, and people dismiss them on that basis. That comparison is not quite fair, because you were going to pay for parking anyway.

The useful way to think about it is: take the package price, subtract what the equivalent parking alone would have cost for the same dates, and look at what is left. That remainder is the real cost of the room. Framed that way, a night's sleep before a 6am flight is often considerably cheaper than it first appears.

It will still usually cost more overall than parking alone. The question is whether the difference is worth not setting an alarm for 2am.

What to check before booking

Hotel-and-parking packages carry more variables than a straight parking booking, and the gaps are where the disappointments live.

• How many days of parking are actually included? This is the big one. Some packages include a fixed number of days and charge for extras. If your trip is fifteen days and the package covers eight, you need to know before you go, not after.
• Where is the car parked? On the hotel's own car park, or at a separate compound? Both are fine; they are just different, and the second may involve handing over keys.
• Is the transfer included, in both directions, and what does it cost if not?
• How frequently does the transfer run, and does it run at the hour your flight leaves? A hotel shuttle that starts at 5am is no use for a 6am check-in.
• Is the transfer shared with other hotels, which lengthens the journey?
• What happens on the return, particularly if you land late at night?
• Which terminal does the transfer serve, and will you need the inter-terminal shuttle on top?

When it makes sense

The case is strongest when:

• Your flight departs early enough that driving on the day would mean setting off in the small hours.
• You live far enough away that the drive is substantial.
• You are travelling with children, for whom a night's sleep and a short morning transfer is worth a great deal.
• There are several of you, so the room cost is shared while the parking cost would have been paid regardless.

When it does not

If you live within a comfortable drive and your flight is at a civilised hour, the package is simply an extra night's accommodation you do not need. Park in a long stay or off-airport car park and go.

It is also a poor deal if the included parking period does not cover your trip, or if the transfer arrangements mean an early start anyway — at which point you have paid for a hotel and still got up at four.

A safety note

Driving long distances in the middle of the night to catch a dawn flight, after a normal working day, is genuinely risky, and it is the one part of this whole subject where the stakes are not financial. If that is the alternative, the package is worth serious consideration on those grounds alone.
