When to book Gatwick parking

Airport parking does not behave like last-minute holidays. Prices rise into the date, so the honest answer is earlier than you think.

People instinctively apply holiday logic to airport parking: wait, watch, and pick up a late deal. It is the wrong model, and it reliably costs money.

Why waiting does not pay

Airport parking is priced by yield management. As a date approaches and spaces fill, prices rise. And the operator knows something important about a late booker: someone searching for parking three days before a flight has already committed to the trip, has a car, and has very few alternatives.

Contrast that with a late holiday booking, where the tour operator is trying to fill a seat that will otherwise fly empty and you could simply not go. The incentives run in opposite directions.

So the general pattern at Gatwick, as at every major UK airport, is that the price you see today is more likely to be the best one you will see than the worst.

The practical rule

Book as soon as your dates are certain.

Not before — booking against dates that might move is how people end up paying amendment fees or losing a non-refundable rate. But as soon as the flight is confirmed and you know when you are leaving and returning, there is very little to gain by waiting and quite a lot to lose.

For peak dates — school holidays, summer, Christmas — this matters most. Those are the dates that fill, and filling is what drives the price up.

The one thing worth weighing against booking early

Booking early gets you the better rate. It also locks you into dates a long way out, and the cheapest rates are usually the least flexible.

So the actual decision is two-dimensional:

• Dates certain, trip firm — book early, take the cheapest sensible rate.
• Dates certain but circumstances shaky — book early, but look seriously at what the flexible or refundable rate costs. On a trip six months out, the premium is often small relative to the risk.
• Dates genuinely not settled — wait until they are, and accept that you may pay a bit more.

What you should not do is take the cheapest non-refundable rate without registering that it is non-refundable, which is the most common version of this mistake.

Booking order

Flight first, then parking. Always in that order.

It sounds obvious, but people occasionally book parking around intended dates while still shopping for flights, and then find the good flight is on different days. Amending parking is usually possible and rarely free.

Should you keep checking after booking?

Generally, no. Once you hold a reasonable rate, monitoring the price is a poor use of your time: prices mostly move up, and if they do fall you cannot usually claim the difference.

The exception is if you booked a fully refundable rate very early and are genuinely willing to rebook. In that narrow case a check a few weeks out costs nothing. For everyone else, book it, note it in the calendar, and stop thinking about it.

Last-minute, no booking

If you are leaving tomorrow and have no parking, do not simply drive to the barrier. The drive-up rate is the highest one there is.

Even booking on your phone from the driveway will usually beat it, and booking the evening before will beat it comfortably. It takes two minutes and is the highest-return thing you can do at that stage.
